A school report card grades each subject from A+ to E- and averages the points into a GPA out of 15. University changes the scale entirely: a 7-point GPA at most Australian universities, a 4-point GPA at some, a WAM at others, and a 4.0 letter GPA for applications overseas. Every one of them is the same weighted average.

How it works

How a GPA is calculated

Every grade is worth a set number of points. Your GPA is the average of those points, with university units weighted by credit points.

    Pick your scale

    Most Queensland schools grade A+ to E- and report a GPA out of 15. An A+ is worth 15 and an E- is worth 1. Some schools use A to E out of 5. University 7-point, 4-point and WAM scales are here too.

    Add your results

    Enter each subject’s grade from your report, or every task so far. Type a mark out of 100 and it becomes a letter. Each subject counts once. At university, add each unit’s credit points.

    Average the points

    Add up the points and divide by the number of subjects. A, A-, B+, B+, B and C+ make 14 + 13 + 12 + 12 + 11 + 9 = 71 points, and 71 ÷ 6 is a GPA of 11.83.

    Set a target

    Enter the GPA you want, such as an award cut-off. The calculator shows what your remaining subjects need to average, and the lowest grade in each that gets you there.

GPA calculator questions

How is a school GPA calculated on the 15-point scale?
Each grade becomes points. A+ is 15, A is 14, A- is 13, and so on down to E- at 1. Add the points and divide by the number of subjects. Six subjects at A, A-, B+, B+, B and C+ make 71 points, and 71 ÷ 6 is a GPA of 11.83. Every subject counts once, however many lessons it has.
What is a good GPA out of 15?
Read it as an average grade. A GPA of 12 is a B+ average, 13 is an A- average, 14 is an A average and 9 is a C+ average. Most Queensland schools set academic awards against this number, often with one award around 12 and a higher one around 13.5. Every school sets its own cut-offs, so check your school’s awards policy or last year’s awards night program.
Is my school GPA the same as my ATAR?
No. Your GPA is your school’s summary of a report card, and QTAC never sees it. An ATAR is a rank from 99.95 down to 30 that QTAC works out from your scaled QCAA subject results, and universities use it for entry. A strong GPA and a strong ATAR usually go together because they come from the same work, but they are different numbers.
Can I convert my GPA to an ATAR?
No, and any calculator that claims to is guessing. A GPA averages report card grades. An ATAR is a rank built from scaled QCAA subject results and compared against every ATAR-eligible student in the state, so the same report card can sit beside very different ATARs. Does my GPA count towards the QCE or my ATAR?
Not directly. The QCE comes from credits for completed subjects. The ATAR comes from the marks out of 100 that QCAA sends QTAC, not the letters on your report card. Your GPA shows how your work is tracking before those final results exist.
What GPA do I need for an academic award?
Whatever your school sets, usually one number on the 15-point scale. Type it into the target box and the calculator tells you if you are already there, what your remaining subjects need to average, or if it is out of reach this semester. If you don’t know the cut-off, ask your year coordinator or check your school’s awards policy.
My school reports A to E without pluses and minuses. Can I use this?
Yes. Switch to the 5-point school scale and the grades become A to E, worth 5 down to 1. A GPA of 4 is then a B average. If you switch from the 15-point scale, the calculator keeps your grades and drops the plus or minus.
Do all my subjects count equally?
At school, almost always. A report card GPA is a plain average of every graded subject. Some schools leave out a pastoral or non-academic course, so if your figure doesn’t match your report, check which subjects your school includes. At university, units are weighted by credit points, and the calculator asks for them on a university scale.
Can I enter more than one result for a subject?
Yes, as many as you have. Add every task so far, such as an A on an assignment, a B+ on an exam and an 87 on a report. The calculator averages them into the subject’s grade, so it works at any point in the semester. Your teacher’s report grade is an on-balance judgement rather than a straight average, so treat the subject grade here as a guide.
Can I enter a mark instead of a letter grade?
On the 15-point scale, yes. A mark out of 100 is read against the five-mark bands most Queensland schools use. 95 and above is an A+, 90 to 94 is an A, 85 to 89 is an A-, and so on down in steps of five to an E- below 30. Schools set their own cut-offs, so if yours differ, pick the letter your school gave you instead. The WAM scale takes marks directly.
How is a GPA calculated at an Australian university?
The same way, with credit points. On the 7-point scale most Australian universities use, a High Distinction is 7, a Distinction 6, a Credit 5 and a Pass 4. Each unit’s points are multiplied by its credit points, added up, and divided by the total credit points. Two 12-credit units at 6 and 5 give a GPA of 5.5, and a 24-credit unit counts twice as much as a 12-credit one.
What is the difference between a university GPA and a WAM?
A GPA averages the grades on your transcript, so a 74 and a 65 both count as a Credit worth 5. A WAM, or weighted average mark, averages the marks themselves, so the 74 counts for more. Both are weighted by credit points. UNSW, the University of Sydney, the University of Melbourne, UTS and Macquarie report a WAM, and most other universities report a GPA. Switch to the WAM scale to enter marks out of 100.
How do I convert a 7-point GPA to a 4.0 GPA?
There is no official conversion. Each university and overseas admissions office uses its own table. Dividing by 7 and multiplying by 4 is wrong, because it turns a Distinction average of 6.0 into 3.43, which reads as a B. When an application asks for a 4.0 GPA, give your GPA on its own scale, name the scale, and let the institution convert it.
Do failed units count in a university GPA?
Yes, at nearly every university. On the 7-point scale a fail is usually recorded as a 3, 2 or 1, depending on how far the mark fell short, and that goes into the average. That is why one failed unit pulls a GPA down so hard. Some universities record every fail as 0. A unit you withdrew from before the census date does not count.
Is this my official GPA?
No. Your school or university issues that, and its rules can differ slightly from a straight average, such as which subjects count and how the figure is rounded. This calculator does the same arithmetic so you can plan. The figure on your report or transcript is the official one.
Where do my grades go?
Nowhere. Everything is calculated and saved in your browser, so it is waiting when you come back. A share link carries your subjects in the address itself, so nothing is sent to a server.
